The short answer

Published Sydney figures put a texture coat render system at about $57–$115 per square metre, typically $80, including GST (What's The Damage, checked October 2026). It costs more than paint over render because it is thicker, goes on in more coats and builds the texture into the coating. Our guide prices use the same bands, and your written quote comes after a visit.

This guide covers texture coatings over render, brick and fibre cement. For the work itself, see our texture coatings page.

The spread is wide because "texture coating" covers everything from a fine roll-on finish to a trowelled system with a membrane topcoat.

Texture coating or paint: which costs more over the years?

Paint costs less on the day. A texture coating costs more because it is a thicker, tinted coating that carries the texture and colour together, and many systems finish with a membrane topcoat. Whether that pays back depends on the system and how it is looked after. The makers' own guidance is the honest guide here: Rockcote's maintenance guide asks for a yearly clean-down, more often near the coast, and a recoat of the topcoat when the maker says so.

If your render is sound and you want a flat, painted look, paint may be all you need. If you want a texture, or to hide patched and uneven render, a texture coating is the job.

What pushes a texture coating job up or down?

  • Wall area and height, and whether scaffolding is needed.
  • Preparation. Patching, priming and crack repair before the texture goes on.
  • The texture. Heavier textures use more material and more coats.
  • The topcoat. A membrane topcoat is an extra coat, and often the reason one quote is higher than another.
  • Protection. Windows, paths, paving and gardens all need covering, and access around the house affects how long that takes.

When can a texture coating go on?

Over new cement render, wait 28 days before the texture goes on. Between texture coats, Dulux allows as little as 2 hours at 25°C. Both figures come from the Dulux AcraTex Sedona data sheet, which also says the coating must not go on when the wall is above 40°C or below 10°C, or when relative humidity is above 85%. In Sydney that can rule out a sun-facing wall on a summer afternoon and some damp winter mornings, so the job is planned around the weather.

What should a texture coating quote spell out?

  • The system by name: primer, texture coat and topcoat, and whose products they are.
  • The texture and colour, ideally agreed from a sample on your wall.
  • Preparation: which cracks and patches are repaired first, and how.
  • Number of coats, and whether the membrane topcoat is included.
  • Protection and clean-up.
  • Approvals, if any. A new colour scheme on a heritage house or a new addition may need council approval. In Paddington, for example, Woollahra Council asks for a colour board for any new exterior colour scheme.
