Before you render
Before you render in Sydney City
In the City of Sydney, heritage conservation areas cover most of the terrace suburbs, from Woolloomooloo and Darlinghurst to Glebe, Redfern and Erskineville. Since the January 2026 conservation area review, the Sydney DCP says existing face brick and stone walls in these areas are not to be coated, rendered or painted, and original materials are kept unless they cannot be repaired. Re-rendering a terrace that was rendered from the start is a different job from rendering brick that never had it.
The DCP has extra rules for older warehouses (face brick and sandstone must not be rendered or painted), naming Haymarket, Chippendale, Pyrmont, Ultimo and Surry Hills. It also has rules for weatherboard buildings, which survive in Darlington, Erskineville and Zetland. Millers Point, Dawes Point and much of The Rocks are on the State Heritage Register, which adds a State approval and the Heritage Council's painting rules.
Harbour-front streets in Pyrmont, Woolloomooloo, Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, Millers Point and The Rocks are within 100 m of salt water. Unitex sets a fixing rule for EPS cladding there.
Rules and site conditions across Sydney City
Each one from the council plan or data sheet it comes from.
Heritage
Sydney DCP face brick rule
In a City of Sydney heritage conservation area, existing face brickwork and stone walls are not to be coated, rendered or painted. Original materials are kept unless deterioration makes repair impractical.
For your render: We check your address against these rules before quoting, so the render, finish and colour suit what the council allows there. Cement rendering
Heritage
Old warehouses
For warehouses and industrial buildings over 50 years old that are heritage items or in a conservation area, face brick and sandstone must not be rendered, painted or otherwise coated.
Heritage
State Heritage Register precincts
On State Heritage Register land, the standard exemption for painting does not cover previously unpainted face brick, stone or concrete, and repainting needs an isolating layer over significant fabric. Other external work needs Heritage Council approval.

Coast
Harbour-front upkeep
On the harbour front, rendered walls need cleaning more often: Rockcote's guide asks for a clean-down of its systems every 12 months and more regular cleaning for paintwork and textures close to the coast. Within 100 m of salt water, polystyrene cladding takes Class 4 or 316 stainless steel screws under Unitex's manual.

Reviews
What our clients say
Courteous, tidy, protected the area from debris, cleaned up after and a good job
“Very professional and so helpful! Good communication and a fair price! Arrived nice and early! The rendering was done very well and looks great. The boys were very careful and made no mess! I have no hesitation in recommending Ali and his workers! I am definitely a very happy customer! Job: rear of house rendering plus a variety of rendering repairs in various places! Thank you so much!”
★★★★★Gregory Williams · “We loved dealing with Ali and his team. They are all lovely and really good renderers. We wanted something a little different (a thickly applied splattered style) in some parts of the house,”bagged” in other areas and smooth render in other parts…all was no problem, and expertly done. All fairly priced too. We would definitely recommend Finishing Touch Rendering. Stephanie and David.”
