Rendering across the North Shore

North Shore render jobs turn on heritage areas, bushland and harbour edges; most councils keep original face brick unrendered in conservation areas. Cement and acrylic rendering across the North Shore, with a free quote.

Before you render

Before you render across the North Shore

Heritage areas decide more North Shore rendering jobs than anything else. North Sydney, Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby, Mosman, Lane Cove and Hunters Hill each have their own conservation areas, and in all of them rendering or painting a house is not exempt work under the Codes SEPP. The wording differs: North Sydney says rendering face brick will not be permitted unless it was original, Willoughby says original brick must not be rendered or painted, Ku-ring-gai says it is not to be, and Hornsby and Mosman say it should not be. Castlecrag's Griffin area is the odd one out, with render as part of its character.

Bushland is the second factor. Suburbs such as Berrilee, Westleigh, Dural, Castle Cove, Middle Cove, St Ives and Pennant Hills are mostly mapped bush fire prone. There, even exempt re-rendering must keep embers out and use equal or better materials, and polystyrene cladding needs a system tested to the site's bushfire attack level.

The harbour is the third. In Kirribilli, Lavender Bay, McMahons Point, Woolwich, Linley Point and other waterfront suburbs, many houses are within 100 m of salt water, where Unitex requires Class 4 or 316 stainless fixings on its EPS systems; close to the harbour, render also needs washing more often.

Rules and site conditions across the North Shore

Each one from the council plan or data sheet it comes from.

  1. Heritage

    Council rules differ in strength

North Sydney's DCP 2025 does not permit rendering face brick unless the building was rendered originally, and Willoughby's Part H says original unpainted brick must not be rendered or painted. Hornsby and Mosman use 'should' wording, and Lane Cove only prefers exposed brick for new buildings in Greenwich.

For your render: We check your address against these rules before quoting, so the render, finish and colour suit what the council allows there. Cement rendering

  2. Bush fire

    Bush fire prone suburbs

On bush fire prone land, exempt re-rendering must be adequately sealed against embers and use equivalent or better materials (Codes SEPP cl 2.54(c)). Check your lot with the RFS online tool before choosing a system.

For your render: On bush fire prone land the render or cladding system has to suit the block's bush fire attack level (BAL), with gaps sealed against embers. Polystyrene cladding

  3. Coast

    Harbour-front upkeep

Along the harbour, render needs more upkeep: Rockcote asks for its systems to be cleaned down every 12 months, and painted or heavily textured finishes close to the coast more often. Within 100 m of salt water not involving breaking surf, Unitex's EPS manual also requires Class 4 or 316 stainless fixing screws, which takes in many North Shore harbour and river streets.

I have no hesitation in recommending Ali and his workers! I am definitely a very happy customer! Job: rear of house rendering plus a variety of rendering repairs in various places! Thank you so much!”
    ★★★★★Gregory Williams ·
  • “We loved dealing with Ali and his team. They are all lovely and really good renderers. We wanted something a little different (a thickly applied splattered style) in some parts of the house,”bagged” in other areas and smooth render in other parts…all was no problem, and expertly done. All fairly priced too. We would definitely recommend Finishing Touch Rendering. Stephanie and David.”
