Rendering in Balmain East

1. Heritage

   Stricter controls for the oldest fabric

   Every lot in Balmain East is inside the Balmain East heritage conservation area. The Leichhardt DCP says its rare early Victorian buildings need stricter controls than the rest of the peninsula, and no alteration to a significant building from before 1850 is approved without a heritage specialist's assessment and recording.

2. Houses

   Rendered brick terraces

   The DCP traces the housing from dressed-stone cottages before about 1860 to Victorian terraces and shops of mostly rendered brick, and notes some post-war brick flats have since been rendered. It lists rendered or bagged masonry among the appropriate materials, so patching and recoating existing render suits the area while shaped sandstone stays as stone.

3. Heritage

   Judged from the water

   Because the headland is seen from the harbour and the city, a DA for work visible from the water must include photomontages of how it will look from the water.

4. Coast

   Harbour-front render care

   Much of Balmain East's housing is within 100 m of the harbour. Render that close to salt water needs more upkeep: Rockcote's systems should be washed down every 12 months, and painted or textured finishes near the coast more often. There, Unitex requires Class 4 or grade 316 stainless steel fixing screws for EPS cladding.
